Over the years I have learned that in order to perform well in my relationships, studies, or workspace, I have to take time for myself each day. This could be as simple as waking up a bit earlier each morning to get ready, work out, or even have a cup of tea. When I take this time for myself each day I notice an extra jump in my step and find myself more likely to get things done knowing I’ve been productive in my ‘me time’. Creating a healthy morning beauty routine has truly helped me to become more mindful, hardworking, and inspired!
Below are some of the things I have developed doing each morning that help set such a beautiful tone for the rest of the day. Rarely do I do everything on this list at once, but as long as I do a few it still counts in my book 😉
1.) Warm water with lemon… Starting the day with warm water and lemon (or cold water and lemon) has helped my digestion SO much! Not only does this help prepare digestion for the rest of the day, but it also helps boost your metabolism and energy.
2.) Hydrate… When sleeping seven to eight hours our bodies become easily dehydrated. Drinking water shortly after waking up will not only help re-hydrate you, but will also help flush out any excess toxins, AND boost the metabolism! Try experimenting drinking different amounts of water in the morning. Personally, my body feels great when I drink about one liter of water in the morning before my first meal.
3.) Stretch… I love taking anywhere from five to thirty minutes in the mornings to do a stretch. I feel like this helps sore mussels and also prepares my digestion for the day ahead! Some of my favorite types of stretches are from Ballet Beautiful. These are ballet inspired stretches that help elongate the mussels and help you tune into your ‘inner ballerina’!
4.) Read… Reading can help give your mind such a mental escape. Whenever I sit down to read I try and do it without any distractions (no cell phones). This allows me to truly dive deep into what I’m reading and really cultivate that ‘me time’. One of my obsessions right now is a book called, How’s Your Soul. This is truly an amazing read that really helps you dive deep into thought and the reflection of who we are and how to look at life from a different perspective.
5.) Gratitude list… Whenever I’m feeling sorry for myself, or seem to just be in a weird funk, I like to create a gratitude list. Wheather I physically write down what I’m grateful for, verbally say it to myself, or even just thinking it. Reminding yourself what you’re grateful for can truly impact your life in such a positive way. What is it that you’re grateful for right now? A loved one, a family, a home, your health, your career? Try reminding yourself every day of five things you can be grateful for and watch it transform your mind!
6.) No phone or computer… I have always been one to reach for my phone or computer first thing in the morning and scroll through social media, and occasionally some emails (something I think everyone is guilty of at times). Not only have I discovered that doing this leaves less time for myself in the mornings, but I also feel it doesn’t set a good tone for the rest of the day. Recently I have been putting my phone on airplane mode while I sleep, and then turn it off only when I have gotten ready and done a few things for myself in the morning. This allows me to take full advantage of my mornings without any distractions 😉
7.) Make bed and air out bedroom… I remember sleeping over at my grandparents home as a child, and the first thing my grandma would have us do in the mornings was to make the bed. I always wondered why we had to do this, I mean we were going to get right back in them anyway, right?! That was when she would always say: “A clean and made bed sets such a beautiful tone for the day, helps brighten up the room and just looks much prettier!” This took me several years to learn, but now I can officially see why she used to say that. Making my bed in the mornings has helped set a precedent for the rest of life. When the bed is made, the house is more likely to be clean. When the house is clean, life, in general, seems to just flow smoother.
8.) Create to-do list… I have found that I get so much more done throughout the day (and week) if I have some type of to-do list to follow. I like creating a weekly to-do list on Sundays that has any important meetings, workout classes, or events that will take place during that week. Then, I like to create a daily to-do list (typically in the mornings) of all the little things I need to get done throughout the day. This may include things like: Making the bed, responding to emails, grocery shopping, lunch dates, etc…
9.) Eat a filling breakfast… I’m sure you’ve heard it before, but breakfast is THE MOST important meal of the day! When we sleep for long periods of time our bodies go through a fasting period. Hence the reason it’s called ‘break-fast’, meaning we need to break the fast. I love filling up on fruits and protein in the mornings for optimal energy throughout the day. Some of my favorites are berries, papaya, mango, smoothies, cold pressed juices, oats, toast with almond butter or avocado, a much more! Try experimenting with different types of foods in the mornings and see how they make you feel 😉
10.) Get some fresh air… Fresh air can be SOO soothing for the soul. A nice walk in nature, open windows, and a cool breeze are all things that have helped jump start my day and clear my mind. Try going for a walk a few mornings a week and see how it makes you feel. If you’re like me and find walking pretty boring, try listening to uplifting music, a podcast, a message, or even an audio book! If you ever don’t feel like walking or simply just don’t have the time, try just opening up the windows in your home to let in some fresh air instead!
