One of the biggest things that held me back from pursuing and achieving my dreams was the fear of failure, as well as the lack of confidence needed to overcome that fear.
Lack of self-confidence, or low self-esteem, is something I believe everyone on this planet struggles with from time to time. The question is: What steps will you take in overcoming that fear?
TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR SELF-CONFIDENCE
Do you ever feel inadequate, or experience low self-esteem around others? If so, I strongly believe that you have the power to change that with just a few simple adjustments in your thoughts and actions. YOU can take control of your life, and YOU can take control of your self-confidence!
Below I outlined my top 10 tips for increasing your confidence and self-image. This list certainly isn’t comprehensive, it’s simply tips and tricks I’ve learned along my journey that has worked for me. Pick and choose those that work best for you, and eventually create your own list to share with others!
1.) Stand Tall. When I was young I was the complete opposite of graceful. I was always tall and clumsy and often slouched as well. My mum started me into ballet hoping that would help with the clumsiness, and thankfully it did! Because of dancing ballet, I learned that I needed to remind myself to stand tall and straight, which then eventually became a habit. Today, when I remind myself to stand tall and straight, I feel better about myself. I like to imagine a string pulling the top of my head towards the sky, having my body follow in a straight line. On a side note, people who stand tall and confident are more attractive!
2.) Take Care of Yourself. Taking care of yourself not only physically, but mentally and spiritually, play key roles in how you feel about yourself and those around you. This can be as simple as eating nourishing foods, sharing your feelings with others, and even taking the time to reflect on your life through gratitude and prayer. How do you feel after you do something for yourself? What steps can you take to initiate self-care?
3.) Keep a Positive Crowd. Have you ever heard the saying you are what you eat? Well, the same goes for who you choose to spend your time with. Like it or not our friends, family, and work colleges can have a big influence on how we feel ourselves and those around us. Whenever I spend time with a negative person who complains often, I find myself feeling very heavy and negative after being with them. We all have the power to choose how we feel and what can affect us, but sometimes it isn’t easy. Choose your friends wisely, and be as picky with who you spend your time with, as you are with the clothes you wear!
4.) Set a Small Goal and Achieve it. So often people set such high expectations and shoot for the moon, only to feel discouraged when they don’t accomplish their goals. Instead, try and shoot for something a bit more achievable. Set a small goal that you know you can accomplish, and then accomplish it. The more you get into the habit of setting small goals, the more often you’ll be able to achieve them and feel good about doing it. Eventually, you’ll be able to set and achieve much bigger goals, as well!
5.) Be Physically Active. When someone exercises, or is physically active throughout the day, a “happy chemical” is released in the brain called Dopamine. Which is necessary for feelings of pleasure and happiness. So run, skip, lift, jump and get happy!
6.) Smile often. In my opinion, a smile is one of the most attractive things someone can wear. A smile radiate’s confidence and say’s “I’m happy, regardless of my surroundings”. Not only does smiling reduce stress, but it can also improve how you feel! Practice smiling even when you don’t feel like it and eventually you’ll start to create a new habit.
7.) Invest in Yourself. Your body is like a well-oiled machine, if you take the time to fuel it properly it will perform well. Investing in yourself can truly make a difference in how you feel and your well-being. Investing in yourself can be as simple as going for a walk, taking a bath, getting a massage or facial, reading a good book, or even taking the time to learn something new and better yourself. The investments and decisions you make today with your health and well-being will greatly impact your tomorrow.
8.) Be Generous. Gratitude affects the human body in more ways than one. Not only does it help make you a happier person, but a healthier one too! According to several studies, gratitude can actually make you feel calmer, thinner and overall healthier. Sounds weird, I know… But, personally, I have found that when I think about the things I’m grateful for It set’s such a nice tone for the rest of the day!
9.) Dress Beautifully. Don’t you love the feeling of wearing a brand new, unwashed piece of clothing? It almost gives you a little boost of confidence knowing you look good! Taking time to dress well doesn’t always mean buying new clothes though. It means taking the time, either in the morning or evening, to set aside certain pieces of clothing that you feel good in and have them prepared for the next day/outing. When you know you feel comfortable in something not only does it save you time getting ready, but you don’t have to worry if you look good or not. Buying new clothes once in a while can be fun, and can definitely give you a little confidence boost! But, if that isn’t in your budget try going through the clothes you already have and figure out what you like and don’t like.
10.) Know your Limits and Boundaries, and live by them. Standing up for what you believe in, knowing what you want in life, and setting boundaries with others may seem very awkward and uncomfortable at first. But, after a while not only will you feel more comfortable in yourself and your desires, but you’ll gain a different type of respect and love from those around you. People admire personal power and determination when it comes taking care of yourself and making “you” a priority. As you continue to develop and learn your personal boundaries and limits, you’ll feel much more empowered!
